David Sedaris wrote this article while he was at the airport. He was stranded due to delayed flight.
His rhetorical audience are the passengers who use air travel. He was trying to paint a picture of how things turned out as a result of the delay. People seemed to be agitated and as a result, engaged themselves in weird conversations.
I have in many occasions experienced delays in my flights and have witnessed firsthand how people get angry and impatient during such situations. Sedaris reported verbatim on the conversations that went on at the airport as people waited. The conversations were not nice but rather crowded by the use of vulgar language.
The use of cursing language is seen in most of the conversations. For example,"Think you can out-hate me, asshole? I was fucking hating people before you were born!" (Sedaris 277). Although I enjoy the scholarly writings of Sedaris, he seem to have certain beliefs and thoughts about other people. I am tempted to think of him differently because his demeanor and the stereotypical mention of Stevie Wonder's blindness. I don't think it was right for him to make fun of anybody although he thinks it's funny to make fun of others.
To a great degree, Sedaris has portrayed himself as an effective writer showcasing his passion for critical writing seem to flow through his thoughts as he shares his stories in his article "Standing By" in a stylistic manner. Sedaris enjoys writing and what other way could one make good use of time than in writing what he does best and alleviate the boredom that could have befallen him had he not used his time wisely!

Sedaris' "Standing By"
In this article the writer is sharing on of the desperate situations people find themselves in while on travel. In this narrative it is clear the weather phenomenon was beyond anyone's control, so people got stranded at the airport. The delay of the flights was attributed to bad weather and the passengers as well as the crew started reacting differently.
People expressed their frustrations by engaging themselves with idle talk.Who was to blame for the delays caused by a natural occurrence?

Assignment 2 - David
It is extremely difficult for me as I write this post to fully explain my take on the syllabus and the Student's Guide as I am overwhelmed by the loss of my youngest brother- Ezekiel's death that happened this last Saturday at our rural home in Kenya.
The syllabus and the Student's Guide clearly spells out the expectations the instructor, the department and the entire university expects from the students taking English 095, 101 and 102. It gives explicit details of everything pertaining to the course ranging from continuous writing and eventually culminating by the preparation and submission of the final portfolio.
On overall, the guidelines are clear and specific. I take exceptions only on the acronyms used such as b.s on page 10 otherwise the yellow book is a good read. I believe the syllabus and the Student's Guide will properly equip me and subsequently make me a writer who is able to be a better writer, communicator both in speech/oral and written literature.
It is my hope that at the end of the semester, instructor will be impressed with the improvements in my writing as well as with the the posts, and hopefully, I come out of the class with an A.

Introduction-David
Hello Classmates!
As you may already know, my name is David, and I am from the beautiful country of Kenya.
And yes, I am loving the cold weather here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but one wish I would wish for right now, is a warm weather, which I miss dearly.
I come from a family of ten children and I am the sixth born-how cool is that-yes, I am always covered by the elder siblings, and I do not get into trouble as much.
I have always liked numbers and that is what led me to choose an accounting major at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where I am currently a junior in the business scholars program.
As an accounting major, that means I am also always busy and rarely have any free time, but when I do, I like to workout in the gym or take a long run around the trails or the lake front.
If there is anyone looking for studying abroad, consider traveling to Kenya where you will enjoy the good weather and wildlife-the big five!
As for my writing skills, I do not really like it that much. Sitting in front of the computer doing accounting is enough already. Plus, being a numbers person does give you an idea what kind of a writer I am....
Hope to learn together in this class as we get to know each other more.
Thanks,
David
